Community (Public) Transport Strategy
Noosa Council has shown a willingness to innovate and invest in community transport with the provision of its successful free holiday bus service. This has been widely acknowledged as being an extremely successful initiative.
The development of a comprehensive and achievable Community Transport Strategy is seen as a major factor in achieving successful transport integration. To achieve this vision will require a significant change from the present situation, both in the nature of existing public transport services, and in community attitudes towards these services. It will be necessary for an integrated community transport system to have excellent community use and support. Such a system will have to be affordable, equitable and be both environmentally and economically sustainable.
In Australian terms, an integrated community transport strategy at this local level will be unique and require innovative funding models. It will represent a bold and fresh approach to community transport practices in Noosa, and make Noosa a leader in the field of community transport.
To achieve these ambitious outcomes Noosa Council decided to obtain the professional services of a highly skilled and specialised international consultancy whose sole focus is on the development of integrated transport planning services. The resulting Noosa Community Transport Strategy identified a series of strategic actions, some of the key actions include:
-
Development of a new Noosa Coastal Transit Centre;
-
Development of key Transit Hubs at selected locations throughout the Shire;
-
Development of a local Noosa Bus Depot.
Noosa Council is now advanced in developing detailed strategies for achieving many of the outcomes of the Community Transport Strategy. Concept planning for the Noosa Coastal Transit Centre is now complete and detailed design will commence during 2008 with a view to constructing the Transit Centre in financial year 2009/10. Planning of the Transit Hubs is underway and the Noosa Bus Depot is due for design and construction during 2008.
